What Is Direct Trade Coffee?
Direct trade means a roaster buys green coffee directly from a farm or producer group — no commodity exchange, no chain of importers and brokers between grower and roaster. In exchange for skipping the middlemen, roasters typically pay a premium above commodity price (often above Fair Trade's price floor too), and get full traceability and a long-term relationship with the producer.
Unlike Organic or Fair Trade, there's no single certifying body behind "direct trade" — it's a claim each roaster makes and defines for itself. That means the strength of the claim varies: the most credible roasters publish the farm name, the price paid, and how long the relationship has run.
Direct Trade vs. Fair Trade: What's the Difference?
| Direct Trade | Fair Trade | |
|---|---|---|
| Certifying body | None — a roaster's own claim | Third-party auditor (Fairtrade America, Fair Trade USA, etc.) |
| Price | Negotiated directly, often above Fair Trade's floor | Audited minimum price floor |
| Traceability | Often to the individual farm or lot | To the certified co-op, not always the individual farm |
| Verification | Depends entirely on the roaster's transparency | Independently audited |
| Social premium | Not standardized | Required, paid to the co-op for community projects |
