Why Nicaragua Is a Giant-Bean Stronghold
3 of the 9 pure single-origin Nicaraguan coffees in our catalog — 33% — are Maragogipe, Maracaturra, or Javanica, compared with just 0.6% sitewide across all 619 coffees we carry. Maragogipe is a naturally occurring giant-bean mutation of Typica first found in Brazil; Maracaturra crosses it with Caturra to keep the oversized bean on a more compact, productive plant; Javanica is a related large-bean varietal grown widely in Indonesia. Most origins don't grow these commercially at all — Nicaragua's Matagalpa and Nueva Segovia highlands are one of the few places that do, producing a distinctively soft, low-acid, mellow cup that stands apart from the brighter Caturra and Bourbon lots more typical of Central America.
Nicaragua's Growing Regions
6 of 9 coffees on this list come from Matagalpa, Nicaragua's largest and most established coffee department, with the rest split across two other highland zones:
Washed, Natural, or Something Rarer
Unlike origins that lean heavily on one processing method, Nicaragua's 9 pure single-origin coffees split across a genuinely wide range:
- Washed (5 of 9): Clean, balanced cups with citrus and yellow-fruit acidity — the traditional Central American style, best suited to pour-over. See full pour-over guide →
- Natural & anaerobic-natural: Fruit-forward, syrupy lots — including several of the giant-bean picks above — that reward slower brew methods like French press. See full French press guide →
- Carbonic maceration: An intensely fruity, wine-like natural variant that's still rare enough sitewide to be a genuine standout when you find it.
