Parainema Coffee

10 coffees · 9 roasters · Sorted by expert rating

Parainema is a Sarchimor-line hybrid (Villa Sarchi × Timor Hybrid) released by Honduras's coffee research institute IHCAFE in 2004 to give Central American farmers strong resistance to coffee leaf rust without sacrificing cup quality. Now grown across Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, it delivers surprisingly complex, sweet cups for a disease-resistant cultivar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a coffee variety and a coffee origin?
Origin is where a coffee is grown (Ethiopia, Colombia); variety (or cultivar) is the specific genetic strain of the Coffea arabica plant itself — like a grape varietal in wine. The same variety can taste different grown in different countries, and the same origin can grow many different varieties.
Does Parainema taste as good as rust-susceptible varieties like Bourbon or Typica?
Yes — that was the whole point of breeding it. Older rust-resistant hybrids often sacrificed cup quality for disease resistance; Parainema was specifically selected to keep sweetness and complexity while shrugging off coffee leaf rust, one of the biggest threats to Central American coffee farming.
